Mary J Blige and Burger King have been having an awful, no good, very bad week.
The Burger chain just issued an apology after the public backlash for an ad for their new crispy chicken wraps. There are a few people who don't get what the big deal, so here are the most common complaints:
1. Because of stereotypes, black people usually don't care to see their fave entertainers singing about chicken...or watermelon...or kool aid.
2. The ad was just awful. No really. It played like a Saturday Night Live sketch.
3. Besides Mary singing about 3 cheeses and holding up 6 fingers, the jingle was just BAD.
4. Did I mention that no one wants to see black people singing about some chicken?
More details (and video of the ad) inside
The ad was pulled from the net within hours of its debut because Burger King claims there was a licensing issue. Yesterday Mary J issued a statement to TMZ saying,
“I agreed to be a part of a fun and creative campaign that was supposed to feature a dream sequence. Unfortunately, that’s not what was happening in that clip.”
She says the ad, which has seen been pulled from Burger King’s YouTube page, was not approved.
“I understand my fans being upset by what they saw, but, if you’re a Mary fan, you have to know I would never allow an unfinished spot like the one you saw to go out.”
Now Burger King has apologized saying the ad was indeed unfinished and released prematurely. They say they are working on finishing the ad and will have it on air soon.
I still think they're missing the point but what do I know? At least everyone knows about their new crispy chicken wraps now!
